Summer Cocktails to Beat the Heat

With summer in full swing, the gloriously warm weather can leave you parched with a thirst that can only be quenched by a cool and refreshingly delicious cocktail. Listed below you'll find a few of the best cocktails to beat the heat. Whether you have a sweet tooth or you crave something a bit more sour, you're sure to find one to your liking. After all, what's warm weather when you have a cold drink in your hand?

Pina Colada

This classic tropical cocktail has a very distinct look and taste. Literally translated from Spanish as "strained pineapple", the cocktail is said to originate from Puerto Rico where is has been claimed as the country's national drink. The Pina Colada consists of a mixture of rum, coconut milk and pineapple juice and is garnished with a slice of fresh pineapple. When blended with ice, it feels more like you're drinking a smoothie rather then an alcoholic beverage. Wherever you are, envisioning sea and sand close is almost too easy while drinking this cocktail.

Long Island Iced Tea

Known for packing quite a punch, this is a far cry from the regular tea infusions and afternoon tea found at Palazzo Parisio. The Long Island Iced Tea is a classic mixture that won't be fading away anytime soon. Despite the name, tea is not one of the ingredients. The name is derived from its resemblance to the colour of iced tea and the fact that it is said to have been invented on, you've guessed it, Long Island, New York. The cocktail is a mixture of rum, vodka, tequila, gin and triple sec, topped off with sweet and sour mix, cola and garnished with a wedge of lemon or lime. This mixture of alcohol holds quiet a lot of flavour, making it a very delicious choice. Make sure you don't underestimate this one though!

Popular enough to have its very own glass, the Margarita is an especially popular choice in the heat, and for good reason! Combining the sweetness of Triple sec, the tang of lime juice and mixed with the unique flavour of tequila, the Margarita is another cocktail popular for its distinctive taste. Served in it's very own Margarita glass, the cocktail is commonly presented with salt on the rim and garnished with a lime wheel. This is definitely a drink for the sour fans.

Needing no introduction, the Mojito is popular for its fresh minty taste. This traditional Cuban drink even looks refreshing thanks to its clear and clean appearance. The cocktail consists of white rum, fresh mint leaves, lime juice, sugar and topped off with soda water. One key element is to crush the mint leaves with the sugar prior to the alcohol, enhancing the minty flavour. This blend is just too good to pass up in the summer.

Summer Cocktails to Beat the Heat

A relatively new cocktail when compared to the rest, it has rapidly risen in popularity due to the sheer elegance associated with it. The origins of the Cosmopolitan are said to lie in Florida. Its popularity exploded with its frequent mentions in the series "Sex and the City". Served in a sophisticated Martini glass, the mixture includes vodka, triple sec, lime juice and cranberry juice, garnished with a lime wedge. The result is a clean and pinkish cocktail which is easy on the taste buds.
