Through the Seasons

Orange Trees

Spring – the heady scent of orange and lemon blossom pervades the far garden, whilst the fruit are also still on the trees, with quadrants of pansies planted beneath.
Borders of jewel like cinerarias and fragrant freesias bloom throughout the gardens.

Bougainvillea

Summer - Exotic and rare species of hibiscus of every hue flower throughout these months.   Oleanders and jacaranda trees, with their indescribably vibrant flowers, are silhouetted against cloudless blue skies.  Equally blue and beautiful are the borders of tall spiky agapanthus.  Whilst a profusion of bougainvilleas featuring vivid hot colours from crimson, through coral, peach and yellow to cool apple white cascade flamboyantly over the ancient stone walls.

Autumn – Picking up from the intense summer heat, this is a time for recuperation, feeding, preparation and planting of bedding plants. However, summer continues right through autumn in Malta, so bougainvilleas and hibiscus still abound throughout the gardens.

Winter –  Christmas features a national collection of poinsettias.  Oranges and unusual citruses are in fruit – and also on sale from the Palace.
