The Orangerie & Grotto

The Orangerie, to the left of the formal garden, dates from 1750 the time of the Knights of Malta.  It has a fascinating roofing structure that gives the appearance of being made of timber, but is trompe-l’oeil and is, in fact, turned in Maltese limestone, with most of its original and amazingly thick 4cm glass.  Originally it would have housed oranges and lemons grown for the house, but now showcases lush ferns, lilies and hothouse plants.  It also features a 17th rustic rocky stone grotto, which conceals an extremely intricate watering system for the grounds.
